Kawano Dental

Branding

Over in Clovis, California, there is a father-son dentistry duo that have combined their practices. With that, they were looking to have new branding to go along with the new building they were going to build.

As we talked kicked the project off on the phone, Dr. Derek Kawano (the son) had mentioned that he wanted to stay away from teeth or anything sharp.

He also mentioned that their business had been in the area for 40+ years and he had inherited his practice from his uncle who also served the area.

This family has been in the community for all their lives and they said that community as well as tailored treatment is what makes them stand out from the competition.

With that knowledge and after learning that their family name means, “River” in Japanese. I was off to the concept board with my good friend and designer, Alexandra Lac.

The Idea

Their last name of Kawano means River. I thought i’d be neat to somehow incorporate that into their mark.

  • Family

  • River

  • Ease

  • Community

Exploration

We had explored numerous options. Ideas such as flowing toothpaste that looked like a river while also being toothpaste.

Current Issues:

  • Use of generic heads posed the problem landed that they were imposing their idea of a specific family on to the community.

  • Vertical River almost seems like flames rather than water itself

  • Reading like “JIF” , use of tools wasn’t reading clearly. Would the Clovis community understand Kanji?

  • Reminds Dr. Kelvin of a sickle.

After a few rounds of exploration. The family LOVED the mark that allowed it to have the kanji as if it was their signature mark on the logo. As well as the flowing river that can be seen as rivers or mountains to represent that community they all grew up in.

While having their name symbolized twice within the mark.

Above are a few examples of what we’ve been able to pull through with their brand so far.
